You do not need to purchase via trip extras. You can purchase direct from gogo anytime at gogoair.com, even if you don't have a flight booked.
Be careful when buying at GoGo before flight. They sell passes that are good only either one airline or multiple. Purchase one for the wrong airline and you're SOL.
