I found another route that goes through Salt Lake City on the way there and Detroit on the way back. How are those airport with winter weather? Switching to Seattle or LAX adds several hours so I'm thinking of gambling on the more direct and northerly routes.
Both SLC and DTW are pretty good. But SLC only has the one AMS flight daily.
DTW has a 2-3 depending on the season.
SEA only has 1, and I wouldn't backtrack through LAX with so many other options.
Unfortunately there is no way to 100% guarantee smooth sailings, but I'd go for a longer connection with at least one more flight going to my destination and not worry so much about the potential weather issues.
MSP gets 5 inches of snow, and there will be a 30 min delay. ATL gets 5 snowflakes and the entire state of Georgia shuts down.
