How much running and terror will there be for a 42 minute connection in Atlanta arriving from Phoenix and heading for a Delta/KLM gate heading to Amsterdam?

Should I pay $5 more to have a longer switch that is through the potentially snowy Minneapolis/St. Paul airport?

Asking as a Mom who is going to be very worried about a slightly clueless daughter making a connection for a long trip. I haven't connected in Atlanta in ages and the last time I did, Delta clearly didn't care about other late Delta flights and I almost missed mine.
