Is this new? A year or two ago I have flown LHR-DXB-SYD with both sectors on the same flight number and no stopover in DXB (when there was availability on each leg but not on LHR-SYD).
I did a similar thing as an award booking, and when I called up to make a change to a different sector on the ticket the agent said something along the lines of "yield management" or "revenue management" don't like it. But I didn't have any issues with flying it.
