I'm not sure if your point is meant to imply something is "wrong" with the OP, but it certainly reads that way.
I, for one, have gone into an airport departures area on several occasions to ask questions, check out where the check in desks are, etc., ahead of time..
usually when I've been staying at an airport and wanted to be clear where I was going when possibly half asleep for an early flight the next day...
Examples....at FRA (when staying at the Sheraton) to locate check in desk and ask some questions about lead times of the first class SQ concierge...at SYD INT (when staying at the Rydges) to locate the EK desks for the next day 6am to DXB...
...at FRA it was certainly easier and cheaper to walk across to the terminal than attempt an international roaming call from my mobile...!
