June is a better bet.

The Banff to Jasper drive is one of the most scenic drives in the world, definitely worthwhile to drive. Note that you will also have to drive back as there is no airport near Jasper.

If you are OK with spring/fall, try late September. It is almost always great weather, cool at night, nice during the day, amazing colours on the larch trees. And as uncrowded as Banff gets while it is still enjoyable to hike or do other outdoor activities.

If you like to hike, and can forgo luxury, you should also have a look at Assiniboine Lodge. It is a long way from luxury in some respects, but the scenery is absolutely amazing.
Thanks for this , will try June then & save fall ( no pun intended for last paragraph ) for another time .

Have done that lovely Banff / Jasper drive . It was rather snowy that spring day many moons ago .
Skied that trip , wonderful powder snow !! ..
But no more skiing now .
Rather accident prone , so we shall see about that hiking bit . Perhaps some short walks
