Just a quick update:

The hotel cleaned our clothes at no charge. They also offered us a bottle of local wine (quite tasty). They also paid for our dinner at an outside restaurant! This came at a total surprise for us and wasn't known until we went to pay our bill.

I have to say that the paying of our restaurant bill totally changed my thought of the whole situation (especially as a surprise). I went and shook the managers hand after we returned from dinner. Really well done.

I suppose that it being Sunday made for difficult handling of the situation initially since the general manager was out.
