I felt that there was more of the native/Maori experiences on the North Island, and if you are looking for modern-day NZ - Auckland is the exemplar, and it is also on the North Island (as is Wellington, albeit on the opposite end).

As I mentioned, South Island is probably more scenic from a hiking/scenery perspective - so it depends a bit on what you want to prioritize more. I will say that, on balance, food and drink was better on North Island, if that matters at all in your considerations.
