He chose the more comfortable flight and will risk it. He is 21 years old and can certainly handle it.
Hard to disagree with that choice. Though I once paid $500 one way to upgrade from BA economy to premium economy and would not do it again (the difference between economy and premium economy is not huge, to me), it's a no-brainer to choose premium economy via DFW (or even ORD) over regular economy via MIA, if price is comparable.
