Another point to consider is that flight delays makes a young man more mature and a problem solver. So avoiding delays is good but not an absolute factor. He is not a creme puff or senile retiree. Still, don't tempt fate and choose ORD.
While I agree dealing with OSO smarten newer flyers up, if he really needs to be there January 4, I'd still choose Miami. Returning in June book him through ORD AND DFW.
