You're forgetting that in those early years, even those mega-awards came with a week's stay in a suite at a Hilton or Sheraton or CN Hotel, plus a week's luxury car rental...and they didn't all have to be taken in conjunction with the flights. CP had a similar award structure, best award 4 J tickets anywhere for 140K (plus hotel and car awards).

Also, flights could be booked to different destinations so if you weren't traveling with a partner, you could book both flights in your own name. Back then, all flight awards came with some type of hotel and car redemption.

On the earning side, lots of route bonuses of 2x or 3x RDMs.
