I had similar experiences with multiple trips with the Vietnamese carriers as well. The first time I was on Vietjet, I had my phone on airplane mode, and a Bose wired noise cancelling headphone. I was told to turn off both of the phone and the noise cancelling headphones. I only use the noise cancelling headphones when i am on the plane.
similar experience as well but on China Southern. I had my phone in my pocket but i had my headphones on. they asked me to turn it off... I tried to explain that its in airplane mode but they told me it didnt matter, it had to be off.
