Hence why QF could fly MEL-AKL-LAX (and still can if it so desired), and NZ could fly SYD-LAX but has chosen not to. Anti-trust allows co-ordination of flight schedules by exchanging data prior to publishing the timetable.
At one time ANZ did fly non-stop LAX-SYD (about 15 years ago ?) It must have a total co-incidence

that after ANZ stopped flying LAX-SYD, UAL stopped flying LAX-AKL.
