It was a quite short piece, just after the halfway point in the broadcast. I was watching it to see if Watchdog brought any magic that couldn't be delivered by - for example - this illustrious board, and I've come to the conclusion that it didn't and indeed was so superficial that they clearly spent more effort on their set, a cut-out aircraft, than on content.
Case 1 was a LGW-Paphos passenger who believe he was out of pocket due to Buy on Board. He paid for this trip before the catering changes were announced, he was offered 1000 Avios (each? total?) and BA simply said "we had to do this to be competitive" and that was it. I personally think there are more remedies open to the customer, in terms of recuperating the suggested £70 lost value, but the programme didn't spend any time on that. The programme didn't mention that refunds are available too, but I can imagine that wouldn't provide a full remedy.
Case 2 was a LHR-CPT passenger who bought reserved seating based on the seat map. The seat map suggested his seat had more space than other seats, I presume this is the known 777 issue. On the aircraft the passenger was irked to discover he was in a standard seat which he could have got for free. BA said you got the seat you paid for and the seat map indicated it was illustrative, end of. FT could have done a better job here, firstly in explaining how seating really work; and also if the customer didn't get the service he reasonably expected, there are remedies out there and again the BBC didn't follow this through.
Case 3 was an extended family on MCO-LGW, which paid a hefty sum for seat allocations as a block, there was an equipment change and they were all split up. BA apologised, and said they would refund the money. The customer said she'd believe it when she sees it. Again this is the same advice that would have been given on this board, and we would have also given advice about the delay in getting refunds. Watchdog added very little value here.
So, not terribly impressed by this, but as someone who has to deal with the media occasionally, I've long learnt that the pictures are better on the radio.
