When you are 99.7% of the way to attaining top-tier status, you would be remarkably thick to NOT "go out of your way" to attain it!

Getting Platinum for 2017 means you are automatically guaranteed at least Gold in 2018 - all that is required is that you take one level-mileage earning flight in 2017.
