I've never had seats not go back right away. Also they shouldn't be changing your seats. If they know what to do all that should be changing is the ticket and possible fare class. The rest of the reservation should remain intact.
Good point about not being able to apply old ticket to the new. The Delta rep said there was not a way to keep the seats reserved and reticket at the lower fare? She said any change would give up the seats and she'd have to try regrabbing them.
Maybe I'll just try the cancel and immediate rebook route.
