I think you were lucky. On my last 3 Basics, I chose exit row windows before the charge hit (I wonder if this 'works' before it gets ticketed?), but in each case I was moved to a window much further forward.
Would rather have had the exit row, but could have been much worse!
The only thing I can think of is that the open jawness of it, returning to LHR, has confused the system somehow. I can't be the first person to book LGW-ABC/XYZ-LHR though.
