As a US GP, when I flew UA in January IAD-DEN-OAK, I was forced to pay $75 for my extra bag, even though I had been told on the phone that I'd be allowed. I found out at the airport that only *A Elite are allowed the extra bag, and as long as US is not in the *A, no free bag.

I'm not surprised your experience was the same in reverse.
