As others already said, your first credit card statement closing date is variable! If you apply now, your closing date may or may not fall in December and lose your 2016 $300 credit...(You'll still get the $300, but it will count toward 2017...) I guess it doesn't hurt to try unless you are willing to wait until October 2017.
I could be wrong, but isn't your first statement date guaranteed to be in Dec? A statement can't be more than 30 days or so, so your first statement can't be in Jan, it has to fall in late Dec at most. If you apply late Nov, then it's possible that your first statement could be in Jan, if you get your card early Dec.
