This happened to me earlier this year, was flying Y from MNL to SIN and was allowed on to an earlier flight. But I later learned that the flight after was overbooked because of a promotion they were running so it's the rare occasion where it was beneficial for them to get me on the earlier flight.
Was successful several times asking to be put on an earlier flight ex MNL, tickets were usually Flexi Savers, and I was either SQ silver or gold at the time. I always felt that as long as the earlier flight has unsold seats, they'd be happy to accommodate, as it will give them more time to sell a new empty seat on a later flight...
