There was an 11:50 and 12:55 leaving LAX to EWR. There were 3 flights the OP could have taken from LAX to LGA. That's 5 flights that the OP could have rebooked. Either all 5 were sold out (or had a segment sold out), or other passengers took a proactive approach when initially delayed and booked themselves a later flight, just in case.

But, the OP's initial line of if "something happens and your flight is delayed, you're done for the day" is far from true. There were plenty of options. And if other airlines have plenty of options but those flights are sold out, IRROPS ain't gonna do a darn thing for them either.
Nope, OP just sat on the plane like they asked us to. They said they'd hold the LAX MKE LGA flight for us. Flight was supposed to depart at 835 (from 750), which would have caused us to miss the connection. Then once everybody boarded on the plane 835 came and passed. And they said it would take a while longer, because ATC was holding the flight. And a while longer became too long to hold the flight at LAX.

There were a dozen people who were told to deplane and wait in line for an agent to figure something out. All the rest of the flights to the NYC area were sold out for the day.

I never realized when you fly Southwest you have to book multiple flights in case a flight is delayed you have a backup.

How come Southwest was sold out, and other airlines weren't?
