Appreciate a little help with this question.

Weeks and/or months after you have purchased your trip, how do you look at upgrade options? For example, if your in comfort plus and your thinking maybe I'd like first class. If I log in to my profile, how do I find out cost/miles to purchase right then? Even though it may be weeks before trip? Or are any upgrade options only available the day before at check in from home.
