There was protection based on oneworld agreements.

This was basically unpublished, but referred to by AA in their published protection policy.

That it had existed was confirmed earlier this year with airlines' announcements that it was being discontinued.

Being unpublished may have meant enforcement could have been problematic in the situation you outline.
