I don't think everyone operates as I do, but I certainly wouldn't deliberately run my holiday travel that close to my work travel such that I had to rely on checking through a bag to have any chance of making the next flight. I think if I was doing that my employer would rightly be concerned.
I appreciate sxc's point if your holiday travel is booked first and then a work commitment comes up you may be put in that situation. However, I personally would say I can't attend or the meeting needs to be rearranged.
I guess this discussion shows that everyone's situation is different
I consciously chose to operate like this as it maximises both my vacation time, and the time I spend at home (consolidating time away actually gives me the feeling of more time on the ground at home, and fewer actual trips

My employer gives me full flexibility, and as such only is concerned if year end metrics will not be delivered. How I choose to deliver/exceed the expectations placed upon me and my team is my business.
