If you are only changing dates/times/carriers, and the first flight remains unchanged, then you do not pay the fare difference. Only difference in taxes and airline-imposed fees.

Wait. Wow. So hypothetically, suppose you got a xONEx ticket where the fare has since doubled, going XXX-YYY-something-something-something-XXX. You're concerned that you'll be charged the new double fare, and were thinking of flying XXX-YYY and
only then calling in to change remaining flights. If what you're saying is true, you can call right now and modify it any which way you want, as long as you do not touch XXX-YYY?
