If it was indeed 'theft', then I'm pretty sure it would have annoyed and unsettled me in the same way that it affected the OP, had I been in his/her shoes.
Makes you wonder just how closely you need to watch your personal possessions/gadgetry inflight these days .......
Some routes are notorious for having to watch your stuff inflight - sad but true.
Apparently the major hotspot are short haul routes around HKG - mainland gangs commit theft on inbound flights and then escape onto mainland short haul hops.
