Are Chinese immigration officials ever anything other than stern of face ? They're fairly efficient and reasonable at applying their rules, but I've never seen one looking like anything other than stern, efficient guardians of the Security of the State. They probably get bad performance reviews if they don't have a suitably severe expression
Anyway Chinese TWOV, as long as you are entirely within the rules and have documentation of your ticket and hotel (if applicable), works fine.
