I guess I'm lucky being based in Cairns to the extent that the business class airfares are relatively good value due to some keen competition between QF and VA (e.g. $450 - $600 for a 2-hr flight to BNE), at least compared to the > $700 fares on HBA-MEL, etc. It is also possible to buy some cheaper JQ 787 "business" class between CNS and SYD/MEL (as low as $450).

Hobart is great city, but, I agree, some of those business class fares out of HBA and the southeastern city pairs do seem to to be very high and arguably hard to justify.

I guess the business revenues at those price points are a gold mine for the airlines and therefore worth protecting in terms of service levels (including toilet access!).
