I think this is really welcome and I hope it becomes an area where they really compete to be the best. Right after they started the air miles tax the rental companies restructured (read: greatly cut) the way they awarded airline miles, and then had the nerve to launch double-miles-offers on the greatly cut totals. Maybe it just took travelers awhile to figure out what was going on. Fifty miles a day is nothing, especially if they charge a flat fee "tax recovery surcharge" at eight times their actual cost!
I think they can be much more generous with free rental days. A really good offer there might get me to pay a few bucks more to stick with the same company. Imagine that - a rental car loyalty program that actually works!
