Seems that Marriott properties re-affirm current elite status when touching the reservation and at check in, while SPG system holds to status at time reservation was made unless you specifically request they update.
That is my experience with SPG status. The record of status at time of reservation sticks.
This is one of many ways that Marriott's systems are better than Starwood's.
