Cyprus voting this week on reunification

I remain ambivalent about the worth of a repeat visit to Cyprus from the US (about 20 hours in travel from the West Coast) but did find it fascinating to be in the country one week before the referendum on whether to reunify north and south. There is heated discussion ongoing as to the UN proposal in front of them. I only heard the Greek Cypriot side; 85% of them are opposed. Yet the election should be highly interesting as they feel international threats are being made as to the consequences if they fail to ratify the resolution.

As RMC500 says, the wall in Nicosia is a mini-Berlin wall. I walked across the old city in about 5 minutes and found the wall in front of me, topped in barbed wire. At points, you see the Turks peering down into the Greek side. They are not allowed to enter. It is possible to take a day trip from the Greek side into the Turkish side on presentation of a passport (a political statement the Greeks don't like, as it implies that northern Cyprus is a country of its own) but you cannot do the reverse.
