Try doing this in any 4-5* hotel in Patong or Pattaya in Thailand (and maybe some BKK hotels) and you will be charged a joiners fee of 1,000-1,500 THB for bringing a "friend" to the room. These guys are not there to help guests but to make sure guests do not bring a newfound local friend from the bar/app to the room without paying the fee to the hotel
Pattaya and 5*, is there such a thing? I've never had an issue and I would have raised a BIG issue if someone at Le Meridien, St. Regis, the W, JW Marriott, Renaissance or Banyan Tree ever mentioned such a thing.
I've only encountered something like this once and that was c 2004 in Florence near Santa Maria Novella when I was at some cheaper place that charged per person per room. They said if my guest didn't leave by 1am that I would have to pay.
