Not surprisingly, Crown Heights is in the midst of significant gentrification. I've spent a bit of time there and have never felt uncomfortable (except for the roaming gangs of Hasidim!).
The parts of Crown Heights I've visited have always felt fine to me, too. But the B15 also goes through East New York and Brownsville on its way to Crown Heights, and I don't know much about the current status of those neighborhoods.
