Thank you for all your replies! I will either take the first flight out or get in the night before (hotel prices aren't terribly expensive, but I have things to do in LA the day before).

I am looking at the nonstop simply because one less flight means one less possibility of a delay (and winter travel around CLT/DFW/ATL can be a mess sometimes).
