I am not sure what you mean by "unrestricted", but I think it is relatively easy to redeem Star Alliance and Standard awards with LH M&M, I have no experience with FlySmart awards.
I was trying to book my wife and daughter on LH in C round trip SFO to FRA (nonstop and connecting) and there was nothing available in June and July (plus/minus 7 days of our preferred travel dates) Called Delta (connecting thru ATL) and had no availability as well but they offered me to redeem twice the mileage and voila, seats available for exactly the dates we wanted Since earning miles thru third parties (Credit Card etc.) leaves me with an abundance of miles I would't mind spending more miles for tickets with no restrictions.

Maybe that's something LH should consider doing.
