Last time I went through PVG (August), those passport scanners in the transfer hallway were closed/turned off/not working and everyone had to wait in line to be manually checked.
Did I just get a bad day, or did they come online since then? Just a curiosity.

Was just about to say this. The English MU site is terrible. Use the Chinese site and google translate if you must - if you're familiar with travel terms and English synonyms, you should be able to figure it out.

IME, yes, you still need to go through the same area to get back up to security and departures. You may, however, be able to skip the line if you show all your docs to the MU staff. But IME you still need to stop at the desk and show it again before they'll let you through.
The MU desk for transfers is basically set up like a wall. You must physically pass by it before you can go upstairs to security.
