Sorry - the problem is i am cheap and didn't want to pay $16 for the only seat available. I didn't actually try to click it so i don't know if it would let me, but I assume it would, i would just have to pay. But there is really no point to paying $16 for a 40 minute flight on a CRJ-200. I just refuse that purchase on principle...

Yes! I tweeted AA and they said the gate agent would have seats reserved for their control on the flight.

This was indeed correct and as i checked in at the airport i was issued seat 3F. There were probably 3 seats open on the plane in the end. Due to a weight and balance request i ended up in the last row.

All that said, it worked out this time, but I don't think that will necessarily be the case all the time.
