It can be done on SkyTeam. I actually found a pretty good fair (thanks to the Premium Fare board here) for US to AKL in China Air PE (US-TPE in PE and TPE-AKL in business). Somewhat reduced mile earning but my E/D fare will earn 100% base miles on mileage, 75% MQMs on miles, and 20% of mileage for MQD (the good part). Also, the layover in TPE in both directions is long.
And remember that PMNW put Orient into its name, I think after WW2. The wikipedia entry on NW includes some interesting facts -- that NW was involved in the creation of JAL, leasing airplanes and crew. And the fifth freedom rights that allowed NW to carry passengers from other countries.
