Thanks to all of you for your comments. My son is a high school senior, and like his friends will be 18 years old.
I am looking at flying BOS-LHR outbound on the daytime flight. We are only going to spend one night in London and then will leave the next night by ferry to Amsterdam. The fares are cheap to London. This flight is a 787-9, as it has a first-class section.
I am eligible for an AARP discount of about $65 per person off the economy price, and this applies to all of us. I just did a dummy booking and it priced out at below $300 round-trip, so I don't want to split the booking. I'm just going to hope and pray that the 787-9 seats are a little bit wider, and will watch the seat assignments to try to get twin seats in the back rather than the three-across. And if it will allow just one person to upgrade down the road, I will take advantage of it.
The good thing is that BOS-LHR is relatively short, and since it is a daytime flight we can get up some and walk around. With the price we're paying I suppose I should take whatever is dished out to me, but I do hope that I can upgrade or buy an extra seat at a reasonable cost.
