The issue is not whether the daughter + bag can make the connection if on schedule, but what happens in IRROPS. What is the impact of a 24-hour delay or a lousy reroute? How experienced a traveler is the daughter?

If the fare or something close is available with the earlier BOS-DTW, I would opt for that, make this a more pleasant and less stressful journey and not push the limits.

As for the checked bag, as a general matter, it has an easier connection than a passenger.
While I am a bit concerned about the tight connection, I checked elsewhere, and it is reasonable for Delta in Detroit - both domestic and international flights are out of the same terminal. My daughter's seat is near the front. If Delta cannot get her to the flight, they will put her on the next available one.

While I would have strongly preferred an earlier flight, the only reason I chose this one was because it was truly a great price - all other flights RT were running between $1,499 - $1,600. This flight was under $700 RT. I hadn't seen it prior, nor since. As long as she is at her destination by the 9th, she will be fine. And while she is not super experienced, she has flown on her own before, and we will discuss "what if's" before she leaves.
