I don't think gift cards will work though for Panera as it says physical gift cards excluded.
Physical gift card is only excluded when purchased online according to the T&Cs. It does not say at store purchase.

Buy gift cards at the regular, stand alone shops that seem to be around many towns?
I interpret the T&Cs below as the gift cards bought at the regular store are eligible.

Seriously, "public" locations like airports, malls, etc. are excluded, so to get the credit you need to buy the card balance first and then use it where ever you'd like later.
Some airport locations do NOT take gift card, probably due to the set up does not take any CC and therefore no POS to process it. At MIA (forgot which terminal) there is a BK shop which told me it was Cash Only.
