It's that "very obvious" part that makes them so good at reducing the chances of your seatmate striking up a conversation.
No offense - I've met some wonderful people on the plane, but we all know how it is sometimes at the end of a long work week when you really don't want to talk or be socially polite to anyone. I find putting those big obvious BOSE on right as I sit down to be a subtle cue.....
