I should imagine that, for any typical tournament where half the players lose in the first round, a sensible policy for most players would be to book a cheap flight after the first round. The extra winnings will pay for the necessary change.
Last month, flying into SFO from SEA and heading to the Rental car station, I came across Laura Robson who had just lost in the first round at LAS earlier that day. I was intrigued at why SFO, why a rental car and where she was going - there were no tournaments scheduled for Northern California and no obvious tennis camps - and home is clearly in England. I thought it would be too creepy to ask, so I simply remained curious.
