We had the same instruction from the Captain of AA 106 landing in very poor visibility at LHR yesterday - adding (to the consternation of some passengers) that "we American pilots enjoy making such specialised approaches because it shows just what this (777-200) airplane can do". He clearly rated American Airlines and Boeing more favourably than LHR ATC or London weather.
