Sure, my US DL probably would have been fine, but if there were any issues, do the police in different countries take the DL of those involved? Then I wouldn't have it back home. $10 means letting them have the International DL if they want it.
An International DL is normally only valid when it is used together with the original DL, so in the very rare scenario that the police in some random EU country will take your license, they are likely to take both.
Of course if it gets to the point that they have to take your license, not having it back in the US might be the least of your problems.
