In case anyone finds this on a search for what to do in the same situation, after first attempting to use the Ethiopian miles and realizing it was going to be virtually impossible to do that with the state of their customer service, I went ahead and filed a complaint with the DOT and Ethiopian finally addressed the issue and credited the miles to my United account.
