That's how I explain it.

Seems fairly straightforward.

Zone 1 is the first zone in the main cabin to board. In otherwords, AMEX snowflakes.

Zone 2 is the 2nd one to board which is where most of the kettle go (Y fares)

Zone 3 is the 3rd zone in the main cabin to board; where the cheapskates on Kayak board.

And Zone 4 is where the even bigger cheapskates, yours truly, board after all the seats are full -the car back home.
