Amazing how many frequent flyers on my flight to PVG are so annoyed that they had to go trough check in counter because of bugs in the digital verification and it not being user friendly as far as taking the picture. One guy said he tried over 50 times and couldn't get it to work.
It's pretty difficult to travel to/from China and have zero interaction with airline staff (even when OLCI goes off without a hitch), so getting this out of the way at the check-in counter is okay with me (i.e. better than at the gate).
