Where did you find these "official" dimensions for beds? In the US, a standard Eastern king is 76" wide! Even the narrower California king is 72". I'm in a hotel room right now without a tape measure, but using my own height as a guide, the bed is 6' (72") wide.

ETA: I see the OP is in UK, and these measurements apply. But still, I'm with GentleGiant - 6" makes a huge difference, whether it's between King & Queen or Queen & Double. I wouldn't be happy with a downgrade.
