You have a valid point. And if JR did go there they would want to book the ticket as soon as they land at Narita! You know, the ones with a big notebook trying to book 15 journeys as soon as they land.

I love how everyone who goes to Japan feels they must have a pass for whatever they are doing. What's the best pass for Tokyo? For Kyoto? Huh? Huh?
